Google Analytics 4 Setup Guide for Business Owners

Why Google Analytics 4 Matters for Your Business

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the current standard for website analytics. If you’re running a business website without proper analytics, you’re making decisions blind — spending money on marketing without knowing what works, redesigning pages without understanding user behavior, and missing conversion opportunities that data would reveal.

This guide walks you through setting up GA4 properly — not just installing the tracking code, but configuring it to deliver actionable business insights. At SecureTechs, we set up analytics for every website we build because data-driven decisions consistently outperform guesswork.

GA4 Setup: Step by Step

Step 1: Create Your GA4 Property

  1. Go to analytics.google.com and sign in with your Google account
  2. Click Admin (gear icon) → Create → Property
  3. Enter your business name, select timezone and currency
  4. Choose your industry category and business size
  5. Select your business objectives (generate leads, drive sales, etc.)
  6. Click Create and accept the terms of service

Step 2: Install the Tracking Code

GA4 gives you a measurement ID (starts with G-). Install it on your site:

  • WordPress: Use Site Kit by Google plugin (official, free) or add the gtag.js snippet to your theme’s header
  • Shopify: Paste your measurement ID in Online Store → Preferences → Google Analytics
  • Custom sites: Add the Global Site Tag (gtag.js) code before the closing </head> tag
  • Google Tag Manager: Create a GA4 Configuration tag with your measurement ID (recommended for flexibility)

Step 3: Verify Installation

After installation, verify it’s working:

  1. Go to GA4 → Reports → Realtime
  2. Open your website in another tab
  3. You should see yourself as an active user within 30 seconds
  4. Also check the DebugView (Admin → DebugView) for detailed event tracking

Essential GA4 Configuration

Enhanced Measurement Events

GA4 automatically tracks these without extra code (enable in Admin → Data Streams → Enhanced Measurement):

  • Page views: Every page load (always on)
  • Scrolls: When users scroll to 90% of page depth
  • Outbound clicks: Clicks to external websites
  • Site search: Internal search queries
  • Video engagement: YouTube video plays, progress, completion
  • File downloads: PDF, document, and media downloads
  • Form interactions: Form starts and submissions

Setting Up Conversions (Key Events)

Conversions are the actions that matter most to your business. Common examples:

Business Type Primary Conversion Secondary Conversions
Service business Contact form submission Phone click, booking scheduled
E-commerce Purchase completed Add to cart, begin checkout
SaaS Free trial signup Demo request, pricing page view
Content site Newsletter signup PDF download, 3+ pages viewed

To mark an event as a conversion: Admin → Events → toggle “Mark as key event” next to the relevant event.

Custom Events for Better Tracking

Beyond enhanced measurement, create custom events for business-specific actions:

  • CTA button clicks: Track which calls-to-action generate engagement
  • Pricing page interactions: Which plans get the most attention
  • Scroll depth milestones: 25%, 50%, 75% for content engagement
  • Chat widget opens: When users seek live help

Reports That Actually Help You Make Decisions

Traffic Acquisition Report

Shows where your visitors come from: organic search, paid ads, social media, direct, referral. Use this to understand which marketing channels deliver results and where to invest more.

Pages and Screens Report

Shows which pages get the most views, engagement time, and conversions. Identify your highest-performing content and pages that need improvement.

User Explorer

See individual user journeys — what pages they visited, in what order, and whether they converted. Invaluable for understanding how people actually use your site versus how you assume they do.
